Solid hardwood floating shelves, built by hand in London, Ontario. Here's what people ask us most before they hang their first one.
Made to measure
Odd alcove, long wall, perfect match to your trim? Send us your length, depth, wood and finish. We'll build it.
Start a custom order
01
How much weight can they hold?
A lot. Every SHELV shelf has the HOVR bracket built right into the hardwood, giving it 13x the strength of a standard rod bracket. Mounted into studs, our shelves hold an average of 300 lbs with no sag and no tilt, year after year.
Your wall, how many studs you hit and the shelf length all play a part, so go into studs for anything heavy.
02
Can I mount them on metal studs?
Yes. The screws in the box are made for wood studs, so for steel studs swap in heavy-duty toggle anchors rated for metal framing. Capacity will be lower than wood studs, so keep the heaviest loads for wood.
Not sure what's behind your wall? Send us a message and we'll point you to the right hardware.
03
Can you make custom sizes?
Absolutely. Every shelf is made to order in our shop, so custom lengths, depths, species and finishes are just another day at the bench. Alcoves, built-ins, extra-long runs and full-room sets are all welcome.
Fill out our contact form with your measurements, wood and finish, and we'll get back to you with a quote.
04
What sizes do you stock?
Depths of 6", 8" and 10", and lengths from 12" to 72". Every shelf is milled to a solid 1.75" thick. Need something else? We'll build it custom.
05
What woods and finishes can I choose?
Three solid hardwoods: white oak, black walnut and maple. Choose a clear coat, a natural finish, or raw and unfinished. White oak also comes in a natural white. No veneer, no MDF, no particle board. Ever.
06
Can I stain a raw shelf myself?
Yes. Raw shelves come sanded and ready for your stain, so you can match your floors, cabinets or trim at home. White oak takes stain beautifully.
07
Will mine look like the photos?
Close, but never identical. This is real wood, so grain, colour and character change from board to board. That's what makes every SHELV shelf one of a kind.
08
How hard is installation?
Most people are done in about 10 minutes. The bracket and screws are in the box. Grab a drill, a level, a stud finder and a pencil. Find your studs, level and fasten the bracket, slide the shelf on. Done.
09
Can I hang them on drywall without studs?
We don't recommend it. Drywall alone can't safely carry what these shelves are built to hold. If your layout doesn't line up with studs, reach out before you order and we'll help you plan the right length and placement.
10
What about brick, concrete or tile?
No problem. Use masonry anchors and a hammer drill in place of the wood screws. Brick and concrete make a rock-solid base. For tile, go slow with a tile bit so it doesn't crack.
11
Will they sag over time?
Not ours. Cheap floating shelves hang on thin rods that bend. SHELV uses the HOVR bracket embedded in 1.75" of solid hardwood, so your shelves stay straight and level for good.
12
How long until my shelves arrive?
Every shelf is built to order, so allow 2 to 5 weeks for production before it ships. Good things take a little time.
13
Do you ship across Canada and the U.S.?
Yes, and shipping is free everywhere in Canada and the United States.
14
What's your return policy?
Every shelf is made to order, so shelf returns carry a 50% restocking fee and shipping isn't refunded. Brackets and unused accessories can come back within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. Report any shipping damage within 30 days.
To start a return, email info@shelv.ca. Full details are in our refund policy.
